Q: Do the hinges have a “lock open” setting? Meaning kids can close it and mash their hands?

I don’t think there is a lock setting, but it stays in place/locks where ever you leave the lid. So it won’t slam shut, you have to push it shut. Our son has never smashed his fingers with it.

Yes, I would recommend based on your question. Our daughters is actually at the foot of her twin bed. It doesn't span the entire width of the bed,however it centers perfectly.

Q: Is the interior roomy or too narrow? Good quality, and safe too?

I put 9 sets of sheets in the package plus a few open sets And some pillow cases- nice quality and safe doesnt close quick but not sure for kids
