Not sure what the obsession is, but it is as advertised
Kid wanted it so I got it as Christmas present. It was whatever it was supposed to be. Kid loves it. Definitely needs a case otherwise it will not last. Glad there was a blue color as that is what he wanted. It was all the rage for the 6-8 year old range. I think it is expensive for what it is but it functions as described.

My 7 year old boy loved it, couldn't stop playing with it
My 7 year old loved it, got it as a surprise birthday gift. He played with it night and day for about two weeks, which is a miracle for any toy. The tech of it is really creative.

Super Cute Tomagatchi But Even More Interactive!!
It's pretty cute! My little brother had one so I had to get one for myself and it is just like a tomagatchi except the animal doesn't expire. It also feels more interactive and like you can actually feel your pet. Super super cute!The only thing that I could comeplain about is that the lights seem like they're flashing at you when your room is dark. It can be a little disorienting. I don't notice this as much when I have the lights on.Otherwise, it's a cute and fun toy!

Fun Virtual Pet
This is definitely a toy for older children but it is also definitely a fun one! This little virtual pet is so interactive from the sounds that it makes to the way it reacts to you petting it and turning it around. The chest it comes in is very sturdy and the instructions are pretty long. Once you get the hang of it though it is a lot of fun.
