Works great with iPod Nano 8gb (4th gen)
Let's cut to the chase: we bought this to hook up an iPod to the car stereo without lugging around a bunch of cd's. With the 8gb Nano, it holds a lot of music (sorry, I'm not into watching movies on a tiny screen. If you do, you got to get a life). I'm using this in a metropolitan area and the frequency I'm using is as low as possible - 88.3.Pros: Simple to use. It CHARGES the new iPod Nano during use, (not listed in the Amazon site). The buttons make it easy to tune in a specific frequency. It has idiot lights to let you know the status of your iPod and the unit itself. Went to the Griffin web site to check the compatibility just to make sure. Uses a mini 2 amp fuse to protect the iPod and that is a great feature!Cons: The "search" feature didn't always find the clearest channel especially at higher FM frequencies. As in previous reviews, I tuned it to the lowest frequency possible that would deliver a clean sound. My radio doesn't go down to 87.7 so I had to find the next higher and clearest signal. This is not really a con since for the money we are all trying to maximize our iPods for the lowest dollar amount we want to spend and to use this in the car for those long trips or just wanting to hear your favs are worth it.HINT: The tuner function is great. Find the clear space on the radio and tune the iTrip. Usually the lower the frequency, the less "white noise" is present. Also, adjust the iPod's EQ to fit what would sound best to you, (I set mine to Acoustic) and adjust the tone quality of the car radio. The car radio volume will have to go up a little. This is a great little product at a fair price. So the sound isn't perfect, but what the heck . . . you got your iPod playing in the car!

Pretty Good FM Transmitter, SmartScan Doesn't Work Well
As far as FM transmitters go, this works pretty well. I live in between Boston, MA and Manchester, NH and was able to find a few frequencies that work OK. While this transmitter doesn't work quite as well for me as the Speck transmitter it replaced, it is better than most I have tried. If you can use a wired or bluetooth connection to get the music on your iPod to your car stereo, don't even CONSIDER any FM transmitter. However, if you have no other option, this one is adequate.PROS:- Can use pretty much the full FM spectrum - not limited to a few frequencies like some transmitters- Easy to read OLED display- Saves 3 presets, which is particularly useful if your commute is long and you lose stations along the way- Low profile power connector fits in most car power outlets without a problem - the plug on some other devices can be difficult to fit in outlets that are at an angle or in the console- Appears to have a stronger signal than most of the FM adapters I have triedCONS:- SmartScan feature does not work very well, at least in heavily populated areas. Of the three stations it selected for me, only one worked - the other two couldn't receive a signal from the transmitter at all. I had much better success manually assigning the presets. Granted, if you are traveling outside of your normal area, even having one frequency identified for you automatically is helpful. However...- Cannot use SmartScan feature without losing existing presets. This is a pain if you are traveling somewhere you don't typically go, since you have to either do a manual search every time you lose a station or clear your normal presets. A manual workaround for this is to store your normal presets as presets on the FM2 band of your car stereo, so at least you have a record of the presets you normally use when you want to reprogram them on the transmitter.- Too easy to clear your existing presets accidentally by pressing the wrong button on the transmitter, which can happen pretty easily if you are trying to access your presets by feel - one button brings you to your current presets, the other erases them. I would prefer the menu structure make you confirm clearing your existing presets before using SmartScan.- A con of FM transmitters in general, not of this particular model, is that you always get some interference when driving, and when driving between heavily populated areas you often need to change frequencies for the transmitter due to interference from new signals. However, this transmitter does provide a better signal than most I have tried, and the stored presets are helpful if you drive the same route frequently. So to sum it up - if you have no option but to use an FM transmitter to get your iPod music to your car speakers, this is a better choice than most. If you have an auxiliary input or other method to directly connect to your car stereo, or have been thinking about replacing your car stereo anyway, pass on this and use a direct connection.

Works great with iPod Nano 4th Gen! NEED TO SWITCH TO JP mode!!!!
On my quest to find a FM Transmitter, I bought a different itrip from Griffin, but it did not charge my ipod nano 4th Gen. So I called Grifin and they told me that in order to charge my ipod nano 4th Gen that it needs to be an itrip with Smart Scan technology. So i returned it and bought this one, and i'm very happy with it.1. This unit charges our ipod nano 4th Gen no problem. The ring of light on the cigarette lighter plug lights up red when initially connected denoting power to FM transmitter, then amber once the ipod is connected (charging), and then it turns green when the ipod is fully charged.2. I have a sealed radio in my car so therefore don't have an audio input unfortunatley (2005 Volvo s40 2.4i) and so FM Transmitters are a way of life for me. Your not going to get the perfect sound quality from these like you would with a direct input, so check to see if you got an aux input in your car first and then just buy a charger and a double male head phone wire. I have a Sirius Radio has an FM Transmitter so i'm use to dealing with changing frequencys every so often. I live in NJ and am in NYC and Long Island a lot. My car can tune to 87.9 which I use for the sirius radio almost everywhere, but sometimes while in NY I use 93.3 (pretty high on the frequency list, but for some reason it's clear).3. Check to make sure your car can go into 87.9 range first, these channels are hardly ever used by radio stations, then switch this grifin itrip autoscan to international frequencies just press function, then press AND HOLD mode for roughly ten secons until a new menu appears. It'll give you US, EU, and JP choices above each of the three buttons on the itrip. I picked JP (for japan) which enables all the normal US frequencies plus the lower range, lower then my car can go, my car only goes to 87.3 or something. A funny thing is that when i tune my car and itrip to 87.9 i get static, but if i keep the itrip at 87.9 and tune my car to 87.8 it comes in perfectly clear. It doesn't do that in my wife's car, 87.9 is 87.9. Just set one of your car radio presets to that and your good to go!4. I took someone else recomendation to adjust the ipods equalizer to "Acoustic" and that definetly sounds better.5. Long story short, I like this product, I got it for a heck of a lot cheaper then any FM transmitter at the apple store. One downfall which people do mention is that it is a tad bit hard to read the display of the itrip when you got a glare, but you can set your own presets on the itrip. Autoscan function is stupid, but apparently this is the model that'll charge the ipod nano 4th gen. Scan the radio yourself for static/ or free channels and then tune the itrip to those.

Richtige Entscheidung

Not great for me!
Out of the box this looks like a nice piece of kit. the instructions are clear & the item fits the ipod & car nicely. It has a clear display & the smart scan would appear to work fine..or does it as I just cannot find a clear station. It finds 3 stations, I try each one & the sound is awful, distorted, fuzzy, I can still hear the radio sometimes. Tried to scan manually to no avail so its back to CDs for me then, £27 worse off!EDIT...OK I changed my rating from 2 to 3. Having taken some advice I did a soft re-set of my Ipod Nano 4th Gen (which I am assured IS compatible with this item). The soft re-set involved plugging the device into my ipod in the car & holding down the menu & centre buttons on the Ipod until the apple logo appears. Then once the menu starts again I tried a song & it was a 100% improvement! Trouble is the signal got worse once I started driving. However after much fiddling (in a traffic jam) I finally found a station that works pretty well.Maybe its the car stereo or the ipod or the device but if you are having any problems I would try the soft reset it may well work for you.

Funktioniert! (leider manchmal schlecht)

Excellent for use in car
I bought this after returning a cheaper transmitter TeckNet MT-096 Apple FM Transmitter For Apple iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G S, iPhone 4G and other iPod Players because it did not work in my car. This item is everything I was hoping for when I ordered the first one - virtually plug and play, clear transmission free from static once tuned to a good station, strong signal which allows me to play my music as loud as I could wish - in the car anyway, not tried it elsewhere. The connection with my iPod Touch Gen 3 is positive and stable. I live in Derbyshire and have a 1995 Honda Jazz, so can't speak for someone who drives a very solid car and lives in London or a similar high-radio-station-dense area, and also I am not a hi-fi buff so can't speak for the sound quality in those terms, but for me it is well worth the money, especially as there is no alternative available for my Jazz and the only way would be a new dealer fitted radio - many hundreds of pounds!
