It will work with a metal music stand only if you put In something like a drink coaster in the clamp portion so what it is clamping is more like a grand piano music rack thickness

What is the distance between the top of the mounting clip and the light bulb?

2 1/2 inches. The height is fine for most music, however for some of the higher sheet music the bulb interferes when changes pages.
