MAPLE NECK/FRETBOARD Fender Player Series P Bass
This is a review for the maple neck version of this bass since there isn't currently a review category set up other than Pau Ferro.Decent bass, but I wouldn't buy without the ability to carefully inspect fret level, nut slot cut and neck twist. Furthermore, I wouldn't purchase without the skill set and tools to do a proper setup.I did a trade for this new bass the other day, and managed to find one in a store that didn't have any unfixable defects after going through two other maple neck versions. And the PF fretboard versions were worse - every single one of them had off-center nut slots, same with every new PF fretboard one in two other local stores. It took me an hour and a half to set the neck relief, action and intonation, with the relief adjustment taking the extra time to settle in between adjustments. The intonation wasn't even close with the new strings it came with. In fairness, I went to heavier gauge strings, so some adjustment was a forgone conclusion, but for the buyer who's cool with the original 45-100 gauge strings, the bass should be at least close - This one was not.The stock pickups are an improvement over what Fender used on MIM instruments 10 years ago, but I'm not a fan of any stock pickups until you get into custom shop instruments, and I found these to be no different. With pickup height adjustment, there was a very narrow range of height where the pickups sounded reasonably good. OTOH, I dropped in a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders, and instant P bass perfection at any pickup height. I suspect most people will be fine with the stock pickups, but would still notice a big improvement by replacing them. After cherry-picking the right bass, spending some time making adjustments that probably should've probably been made at the factory to some level, and spending another $100 on a replacement pickup, I'm into this one for $950 if I agree the trade was fair, which I do.That's $800 less than an American Professional II P-Bass with Maple fretboard/neck. I'd still need to do some mild fret work to get it to the A-P II standard, along with dropping in better quality volume/tone pots and a high-mass bridge. Worse case, that's another $100, though closer to $55 if I didn't have to have a Fender-branded bridge. Worse case, I'd still be $700 below the price of an A-P II for a comparable bass if a comparable bass was the goal.Think I'll just play it for a while and then decide.

"KS*Music*Center" has canceled order because the price was not set correctly by seller
I thought I had found a good deal through Amazon on this Fender Player P but hours after my order was put through I received an email saying that the seller reneged on the sale. I was really looking forward to playing this Bass. I wish "KS*Music*Center" would have stood by their advertised price.
