Luxury Liner

This is one of my all time favorite musicals. I grew up watching it with my mother on a regular basis, so I may be a little bias.Anyway, most people reading this have probably seen the movie already and are more curious about the quality of The Archive Collection and if it's actually a workable, quality DVD.... as I was before my purchase. The Archive Collection consists of films with too little demand to make and sell in mass quantities, so they basically burn a copy for you upon your request for the merchandise. I was worried it wouldn't play on my DVD player or be really poor quality.I have 3 DVD players set up to test it on. It worked on all but my VHS to DVD recorder. I wasn't too worried about it because that is a machine meant to record VHS onto DVD anyway, but does play DVDs alone. It worked fine on my computer and PS3.The quality of the picture is about the same as a VHS tape, so it hasn't been re-worked and improved, which is fine by me. I was worried it would be worse or super hazy, but it wasn't.I'm just glad to be able to own the film. I enjoy it so much, I would have given it 5 stars, but it lost one for the disc not playing on one of my DVD players.Thanks to Warner Brothers for giving us this option as opposed to none.

I'M A HUGE MOVIE MUSICAL FAN AND HAD TO REPLACE SOME OF THEM DUE TO RELOCATION LOSS,THIS IS A WONDERFUL FILM AND JANE POWELL'S PASSING HELPED WITH MY DECISION TO GET HER MOVIE'S,IT CAME QUICKLY AND I'M ORDERING MORE,CUGAT AND MELCHIOR ARE DELIGHTFUL AND FRANCES RAFFERTY WAS LOVELY,BUT MISS POWELL IS A JOY TO BOTH WATCH AND HEAR,THEY SHOULD CO.E OUT WITH BOX SETS FOR HER,SHE DESERVES IT

Jane Powell is one of my favorite movie musical actresses. She has a beautiful voice and knows how to caress a song or sing with humor and for pure joy. The plot of Luxury Liner is paper thin and does not really justify the 90+ minute feature film. But, the big surprise or disappointment for fans of Powell in such movie musical classics as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Royal Wedding will be that virtually the entire score consists of arias from great operas. There is no real choreography and no genuine show tunes that are memorable. The technicolor is wasted on costumes and sets that are substandard. George Brent is listed above Powell's name in the credits despite the clear fact that Powell is the real star of Luxury Liner. Brent is only scarcely believable in his role as Powell's father and the captain of a luxury liner. I will watch this DVD again, but not with great enthusiasm. It is mostly lackluster entertainment when one is depressed or just needs to quietly fall to sleep at bedtime. It facilitates yawning.

Jane Powell was delightful as a pushy young gal bothering the character played by Lauritz Melchoir with Xavier Cugat ans his band always in the background. Fun but years ago where I began to learn that voices like Melchoir's were worth listening to and hearing him again proved my memory was correct. Beautiful opera singer. Simple story great music.

If you enjoy older musicals (30s, 40s, and 50s.) then this film starring Jane Powell should entertain you. It's very light and not much more than fluff but still a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

I love Jane Powell! And you can't go wrong with the great cast in this movie! I love Jane's younger movies, but the one thing about them is, she seems to play exactly the same character in all her younger movies, just spun slightly different. But, they are all good anyway!In this one, Jane is the daughter of the captain of a luxury liner. She decides to stow away on his upcoming voyage when she finds out there will be a troupe of opera singers headed to Rio de Janeiro. An interesting voyage is sure to happen now!

A wonderful olde

I saw this movie in 1947. As a 17 year old lad, I fell in love with Jane Powell. I saw the movie 7 times. I also loved Lauritz Melchoir.I was also a Tenor myself, so I admired him very much. I have often thought how nice it would be to write to Jane Powell and tell her how much pleasure she has given me through the film. My wife and I watched it together and she enjoyed it as much as I. We have been married 64 years last March 18th. Thank you for sending the film to me.Sincerely,Earl F. Braswell

This is a great film the singing is fantastic I had not heard of the Soprano so a wonderful voice and the Tenor is one of my all time favourites.

Lovely movie - simple, colourful, entertaining. 'Spring Came Back To Vienna' is a delight.
