A peak at another time that few people today know existed.
It took me a chapter or two to adapt to Roosevelt's writing style. Then I really enjoyed the experience. His comments on the state of Africa, the condition of the people and his perspective on the benefits of the colonization by Britain, Belgium and the Dutch gives the reader a great look at the history of the time and how that history has been distorted to fit today's narratives. Roosevelt was a great sportsman and a great observer.

This is A great way to get to know one of the best Presidents we have ever had
Theodore Roosevelt was A monumental part of our country, this book is about him and his son Kermit, as theytraveled across Africa together, it is A great book about hunting, but when I read it , I found it was much morehow he bonded with his son, and dealt with the great pressure of the explosive issues of his administration. It is A long read, 600 + pages, but I found worthy of every minute I invested.God Bless......Jim.

Teddyf's own words
Interesting to see Teddy's own words in print, the stilted phrases and expressions of the day. Had read this book in hardback some time ago and was reminded that even though he was a dedicated conservationist, he and his son and their companions took a lot of game on a wholesale basis for the purpose of providing taxidermy specimens for several museums. By today's standards, it would be quiet unacceptable. Many of his trophbies are still on display in DC and New York. My most recent read of this book came after seeing a very detailed History Channel program about him which made him all the more understandable.

Conservation at it's youth
Roosevelt gives us a day by day accounting of wehat it meant to try and share a turn of the century safari in a country that was truly primitive. His comments on the native people show how some attitudes on race have barely changed in roughly a century. It gives you an insight as to where our museums obtained their exibits in days gone by. Overall a very good read.

Not everyone’s cup of tea but written well to read as an era time piece! Some people will take offense in words used

Wonderful story of early 20th century Africa
Wonderful read. This book is a diary of a year long African safari undertaken by "Teddy" Roosevelt and his teenage son Kermit. The purpose was to collect specimens for museums and the Smithsonian Inst. in Washington D.C. The language and thoughts of that era are interesting and some of the observations would not be tolerated today, but that was 100 years ago thd different thoughts prevailed. The difficult conditions, interesting characters and the stories of human indurance are wonderful. People were certainly used to great physical hardship and were certainly tougher than most anyone I know today. One of my favorite books!

Enjoyed the stories and candid prose of our president
Interesting book. Enjoyed the stories and candid prose of our president. It was interesting reading his thoughts and descriptions of areas and people. Very knowledgeable and trying to share observations of a wide variety of species, especially from a hunters point of view. Only drawback to this book is the poor quality of the reproduced photographs. Some of them are so bad it is hard to tell what or who is in the picture. Still liked the book, but will try to find an edition or printing with better quality photos.

+100 Years and Going Strong
It is hard to write a review about a book that has been in print for over 100 years and say anything new about it. I have read quite a few books about African hunting and have hunted in Africa a number of times, in spite of this I would not consider myself to be an expert and actually quite the opposite. When you read books as old as this one, you gain a different perspective on how we do things now and the way they were done. Certainly, the idea of taking more than a 10 - 14 day safari would be alien to most people in the world today, where we are all "too busy" or "too important" to be away from work for any length of time. It was interesting to read about how hunting was viewed and the relationship between Roosevelt and the animals. The prose are dated, which is to be expected but overall it gives a sense of a different time and place and one that you almost seem like you are visiting. If you are wanting a book that is "action packed" or full of hyperbole, this is not it. If you want to read a hunting classic that takes you back to a different time, you will not be disappointed.
