Wilhelm Steinitz: First World Chess Champion (World Chess Champion Series)

Bits of History
Lots of interesting material on the first world chess champion. The games are of course very good and the notes to them are OK. The problem with this book and others in the series (Capablanca & Lasker) is the piecemeal approach to much of the information. It is presented in dribs and drabs and all over the place. Information on other players, often worthwhile is apparently just dropped in. The books are good, but in real need of a skilled editor. It was once said of Steinitz that if you dropped the pieces onto the board from above, you had the style of Steinitz. That appears to be the approach taken to the presentation in this book.

Lots of errors
I had heard great things about the Linders' scholarship, but I was disappointed to find that this book has a lot of errors. Worst of all, they are often sloppy errors. For example, on page 63 it states that at Baden-Baden 1870 "for the first time ever ... draws counted as a half-point." So then how can it be that on page 62 we're told that at Dundee 1867 Neumann beat Steinitz by a half point?

A marvellous review of one of chess greatest characters.
An excellent book which brought to life the era of Wilhelm Steinitz and his many opponents. The reviews of many of Steinitz lesser known games showed him to be a great master of both romantic and positional style. The review of his life showed both the high points and the tragedies that Steinitz faced. All in all a wonderful book about one of the greatest characters who ever lived.
