Closer to Freedom: Enslaved Women and Everyday Resistance in the Plantation South (Gender and American Culture)

I’m someone who has extensively studied American history I thought I knew everything about the period of enslavement. But this book presented enslavement in an entirely different light by focusing on the plight of enslaved women and on the small acts of rebellion that enslaved people performed. Too often we focus only on the grand results of escape from enslavement, but for many this type of action was impossible. Yet, enslaved people were able to defy their circumstance in a variety of creative and powerful ways. This book explores this often forgotten story.

Nothing to dislike at all.

This book breaks down alot. Although you get the it wasn't always that bad perception. To me in the beginning of the book the author tried to make it seem like it was a feminist book. But it wasn't it must be understood it was an institution a system created by europeans to establish a system of white supremacy and maintain it and sustain it for the benefit of them and there descendants. The book is very informal and speaks to the trials faced by The Mothers of Creation under this Global System of Racism/White Supremacy. A good read

I enjoyed this book as it carries personal tales of the struggle and resistance of slaves. It's a well written and researched account. However, while the title claims to focus on women, the book is mostly a general description of slave resistance with some bits and pieces about gender differences strewn about to satisfy Camp's attempt at proving her thesis. Those parts, although interesting, aren't the best parts of the book.

An excellent work that gives substance and depth to the experience of slavery from the perspective, especially, of enslaved African women. Professor Camp's work discloses features of slavery and southern society that normally are not made explicit - humanising the enslaved in the process and connecting their efforts to the dramatic events following the Civil War.

Just in time to complete my class

Was very enlightening. The key to what is in the book is in the title. Everyday. I Was amazed to find the slave girls liked to "dress up" and go hide in the swamps and go to a dance.

I had to read this for my college history class. This book kept me engaged and enlightened.
