can these be used for hairdryer / straighteners?  This way my Partner does not have to swap plugs behind her dressing table.

Don't see why not. They are three pin so can take an earth wire and are rated up to 10A which I would image is plenty for hair dryer/straighteners. They are a bit fiddly to wire up but just take your time and make sure all the connections are using the correct wire and are securely made.

Question 2

I cut through my extension cable (which I use for my lawnmower) with shears. Would this be suitable to repair it? Thanks in advance.

It would depend upon the current rating of your machine but I imagine it would be within the 10 amp rating, check this first. This is a three pin plug with an earth pin for three core cables whereas you device may only have a live and neutral two core cable, this would not prevent using this connector but you would need to ensure you did not connect either of the two cables to the earth pin which is left in place with no cable connected. If it is three core cable then obviously all three cores are connected. This is a hard plastic connector really for internal use and perhaps not moisture resistant enough or robust enough for garden use I would say. Check how many cores your device cable has and look for a rubberised two or three pin connector of the right amp rating, maybe a bit more expensive but probably worth it.

Will the socket fit through a letterbox of my front door ?

As the package it will be sent in and the size of you letter box are not know it is an unanswerable question with any accuracy. 
As the item is pretty small I think the chances of it fitting thought the letterbox is very reasonable. If it is not being posted by Amazon then I would suggest when ordering asking the supplier to put minimum packaging and I am sure most will oblige. Not sure about Amazon themselves as they have standard cardboard envelopes but even those can be letterbox sized.

This connector is intended and designed to have one cable in and one cable out. Make sure that the cable connected to the mains supply plug is connected to the female socket half and the item you are using, a light or domestic appliance for example, is connected to the male half. The female half has sockets and the male half has pins. You also need to be careful with polarity and make sure Live, Neutral and Earth are connected correctly to both halves. This connector is only rated to 10 amps so the mains plug should also be fused to a maximum of 10 amps.
