It is a self resetting button, no apparent difference when on or off. Always best just to unplug the Garbage Disposal when you have to work on it. Easy to unplug and then plug back in. If the Garbage disposal has jammed up and won't spin there is a good chance that the Circuit breaker on the disposal bottom has tripped. Don't forget to reset it after you unclog the jam. (push the button back in on the underside of the GD)
