Brewmaster - DME10A 1/2 lb Dried Malt Extract - Light (Powder Form)

I recently used Brewmaster DME10A 1/2 lb Dried Malt Extract Light (Powder Form) for making MEA (Malt Extract Agar) and was thoroughly impressed with the results. The powder dissolved easily in water, creating a smooth mixture without clumps, which is crucial for agar preparation. After autoclaving, the DME held up exceptionally well, maintaining its properties and nutrient content.Using a ratio of 10g of malt extract to 10g of agar in a 500ml media bottle, I was able to pour approximately twenty 100x15 petri dishes per batch. With 1/2 lb (227g) of malt extract, I can make about 22 batches, yielding a total of 440 petri dishes. At a cost of $8.49 for the 1/2 lb, the cost per petri dish comes to approximately 1.93 cents, making it a cost-effective choice for my microbiological work.Overall, Brewmaster DME10A is an excellent option for MEA agar preparation, offering ease of use, reliable performance, and great value. I use LME to make agar plates and LC. I use it in smaller amounts so when I get a LB, it normally starts getting solid towards the 2nd half of the bag. I've found if you have a vacuum sealer, its way easier and last much longer if you seal between uses in a sealable bag. So if you use smaller amounts also this is an ideal portion.

I use this for mycology purposes and have had no problems.

If you have never worked with light malt extract before, word of caution its super sensitive to liquids, including humidity. I live in a very humid climate and I have to be quick when exposing this stuff to the air or it starts to clump and get sticky. This is no fault to the brand, just characteristic of light malt extract. I use this light malt extract with agar agar to make my culture plates for fungi cultivation.
