Throughout my 14 years of teaching experience, I have consistently observed a rise in challenging behaviors among students. This realization led me to question the traditional approach and consider that if students are not learning the way we teach, we should perhaps teach in a way that resonates with how they learn.Conscious Discipline provided many enlightening moments that further deepened my understanding.My upbringing in an authoritarian household involved learning through consequences rather than understanding. Similarly, my teacher assistant experience exposed me to classrooms where obedience and emotional suppression were prioritized. These were the only models I had, and I unknowingly replicated them when I became a teacher. It wasn't until I became a mother that I approached teaching in the manner I would want for my own child. Regrettably, I lacked the resources and strategies necessary to adopt a different teaching approach. This compelled me to embark on a journey of self-discovery to assist my students better. Conscious Discipline has shown me that the key lies within me. Although I have no control over the lives or behaviors of my students, I possess the ability to govern my own actions. By consciously demonstrating self-regulating strategies and incorporating them into my own behavior, I can serve as a role model for my students.Overall, Conscious Discipline aims to foster the development of social-emotional intelligence, self-control, and resilience in both students and educators, leading to improved behavior, academic success, and overall well-being.

Bought this for a college class, was way cheaper then through my university and came way faster! Great book!

Conscious Discipline is a game changer in the classroom. While I have always incorporated elements of conscious discipline, I haven’t necessarily done it knowing it was a part of conscious discipline. The author lays it out so clearly in this book that it seems easy to follow. This book gave me a guide on how to implement in my classroom and my classroom management has changed so much in a positive way.

This whole idea of conscious discipline works not only with children but with adults as well. It is a different way of thinking about and understanding children's behavior. Dr. Bailey gives ideas of strategies to consider trying so that children get what they need to guide them through life. It has changed the way I conduct myself with children and adults as well. Children are growing up in a much different world than I did in the 60's and 70's. This book by Dr. Becky Bailey gives new insight and a great deal to reflect upon to raise strong socially and emotionally confident children.

We had to read this textbook too as a requirement. The profs raved about it. However, I hate it when they give you textbook designed for elementary kids and say it's fully adaptable to high school kids. Secondary teachers are specialists: we want exact methods and examples. I don't want to guess how to modifiy or interpret things for us.I have no doubt this book is useful in some regard. If you don't want to read it, just watch a good Alternative Teacher do their magic in the class for a few weeks. It's pretty much what they do. What I see here is a basic system, one of many, that probably works all right. I just wish the author would write a secondary school version. Colleges around the states are using this in these programs anyway, it just makes sense to make it relevant to us.As for the research, I'm not a big a stickler as others on the matter. It's psychology, not biology or chemistry. It's a super soft theoretical science. Education research and the scientific method are very important, but in my ten years of teaching I've noticed that few people can replicate their "scientific" results in most every class. What I care for is what works in general. I want something you can apply with a little bit of theory behind it. It's like a pediatrician who has never had a kid telling me what to do from their training and research. I'd much more believe a mother who raised six kids and never attended college. Dr. B is the best of both worlds in this regard. People wanting more theory and resources should just lighten up. It either works or doesn't--no need get disappointed because reams of research doesn't back it. We're just not in a scientifically reliable industry. But we can get close. This book is a good try. It's love-based: how can you really fault that?

As a special education preschool teacher who specializes in children with behavior, this book has been truly enlightening. Dr. Becky Bailey’s book is easy to read and understand. She lays out a strategy for building those early, necessary connections each child and adult need in order to get our brains in an optimal place for learning, socializing and overcoming trauma. I cannot wait to see the results with my students!

Conscious Discipline is a model focused on skill building, problem solving, and transformation. It got against the traditional way people in this country teach or parent. It all makes so much sense compared to the typical rewards/consequences approach. I am learning to work this model into my professional life (as a school social worker/in home counselor) as well as my personal life. With every page I read I find myself wanting to shout what I've learned from the rooftops. I will recommend this book to anyone who will listen.
