Is this needed, if only using my Nikon on manual modes?

If you are only using live view there is no need to calibrate your lenses. If you are happy with the viewfinder focussing again there is no need for this. If you think your lenses are not focussing correctly through the viewfinder then this would allow you to calibrate your lenses. All my Nikon lenses were ok only my Sigma macro lens needed calibration.

This is good quality plastic. Something similar to the black keyboard caps. Its about 3mm thick. Got water levels for both axis.

will this work with a Nikon D800?

it will work with any DSLR body which has AFMA (autofocus microadjustments) options in its menu
